South Korean mobile operator LG Uplus Corp. will build an immersive extended reality (XR) service platform leveraging K-pop content and the metaverse app to reach beyond Korean borders and reach global audiences.
LG Uplus CEO Hwang Hyun-sik told a press conference at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022 in Barcelona on Tuesday that LG Uplus had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on content development XR with Zain Group at MWC 2022. Zain Group is a mobile operator in the Middle East with 50 million subscribers in seven Middle Eastern countries.
The mobile operator has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Oman’s leading mobile operator, Omantel, to collaborate on XR content and solutions.
XR is a technology that encompasses Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Among Korea’s three major wireless carriers, LG Uplus has been the most aggressive in developing the XR platform and content after Korea became the first country in the world to successfully commercialize 5G in 2019.
LG Uplus exports XR content to countries in Southeast Asia and is now expanding into the Middle East. LG Uplus has also had discussions with Celcom, Malaysia’s third-largest mobile operator, regarding the provision of new Korean content such as K-pop.
LG Uplus aims to accelerate the export of XR content service platform with K-pop content. It will first introduce “Idol Live”, which allows fans to watch concerts of their favorite K-pop stars in augmented reality from different angles, in more countries.
As content becomes increasingly important in computer-modified reality solutions like XR, LG Uplus will enhance the content business after hiring a Chief Content Officer (CCO) last year, Hwang said.
Hwang also said that LG Uplus will focus on developing metaverse services that can create better value for users instead of just following the current hype.
For his business-to-business (B2B) transaction services business, Hwang revealed that he plans to focus primarily on smart factories and AI contact centers (AICCs).
